Although there are no specific birthdays to celebrate this week, March 8th will be International Women’s Day. As my trying to get into that topic might ironically be considered “mansplaining” to a group overwhelmingly distaff, I refer you instead to the United Nations site where pertinent resources can be read.
Ukraine Crisis

Our group is one focused on health and camaraderie, inasmuch as politics do not define us, although it is a topic not shied away from on walks. That said, I’m putting it out there: is there any interest or thoughts towards helping the people of Ukraine in any way as a group? I’ll leave that hang for face to face chats…
Weekly Walks
The weather is yoyo like for the next while so conditions may be unpredictable. If we are lucky enough that we can “walk the dog”, it’s Saturday at 8am at Loblaw‘s for a walk wherever, although based on previous days, it’s possible the Spit may be a good option as winds will be mild and temp around freezing. We can consensus that on the day.
Post-walk, Timmie’s is an option as usual, and since vaccine passports are no longer mandated, probably easier than ever. That said, it’s likely to be busier than we have seen in a long while.
I support donating the Shorethings funds – wherever it will be of benefit. Thanks for the suggestion.

There are some charities mentioned in the Saturday Star including this one, which is apparently being matched by the Government 4-1. Check out this website and let me know what you think. https://foodgrainsbank.ca/donate/

Looks like either the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders. Should we send an email to the group to see if others would like to contribute?

Either works. Just FYI, the matching gov contribution has been maxed out so if it’s the Red Cross, then it would just be what we put in. Then again so would DWB.

Good idea Charlotte. I am willing to add to the fund for Ukraine. I know a person whose daughter works for Doctors without Borders and it’s a good organization to donate to.

I will be out in the morning at Loblaws at 8am.
I am open to donating to the cause and will support any of the above options.

Doctors Without Borders is another option.

In regards to donations, I have a good friend that her husband is an X Toronto Fire Chief (now retired) and has volunteered for Global Medic for a # of years and they do amazing work around the world. This may be another good organization to donate to…check our their website (I do know they are currently involved with the Ukraine situation.

Charlotte, that’s a great idea; and maybe we can send you a separate donation (in the amount that we can afford) to add to the total?

We have $575.75 in our Shore Things bank account which is presently earning $.02 per month in interest. Should we invest at least $500 in Ukraine? Some charities like Red Cross have matching donations from the government. Thoughts?

Great post Bob; thanks for the link to International Women’s Day; and also the suggestion that perhaps we can do something as a group for the Ukraine crisis. I’d love to follow through on that ~ let’s all do some research and see what’s possible. I’ll be walking with the smaller group tomorrow morning, but we’ll discuss this after our walk. Have a lovely weekend everyone, and thanks Bob, for your ‘finger on the pulse’ posts!

Sunshine, ice-free paths, and (relatively) warm weather. Looking forward to walking tomorrow from Loblaws.
